The secret of the red light district
Amsterdam is also known for its ‘Red Light District’. Traditionally the zone where prostitution is practiced and originated since the fourteenth century, to entertain sailors who yearned for female companionship.

‘De Wallen’ (Amsterdam’s main red light district) is currently full of brothels, (gay)bars, sex-shops and other places of entertainment and can be found in the old center. Among tourists it’s is very popular to visit. The streets along the canals are very narrow and it becomes almost impossible to walk, especially on busy days. But nothing prevents the visitor from watching the ladies live behind the windows.
We would not really recommend this area to visit, but if you still want to, then definitely visit ‘Red Light Secrets, Museum of Prostitution‘. The museum is housed in an old brothel and still in its original state. Inside you can experience live and learn what such a working place looks like. And you can sit behind a window like a prostitute while being watched by the people on the street. Really an experience 😉
