A Hamlet without streets and cars, that’s Giethoorn

Ok, this place is not in Amsterdam. And on top of that, you have to travel a bit for it.

But hey, then you are in Giethoorn, a picturesque village which you can only visit by walking, by bike or by boat. Highly recommended to go if you are looking for a place to unplug and unwind and like to enjoy an idyllic boat trip. National Geographic writes about this: “the tranquility is almost dreamlike”.

Small Green Dutch Venice

The village with around 2,600 inhabitants is unique in the Netherlands: lots of water, arched bridges and founders. The farms are on islands. Giethoorn therefore has various nicknames such as the ‘Small Green Dutch Venice’.

How to get in Giethoorn?

You can go on your own, but we recommend doing this via an organised tour, like ‘Amsterdam Lake District Tours‘. They are specialised in tours outside of Amsterdam with small groups.
